The urencriterium (1,225 hours a year) determines whether you qualify for the zelfstandigenaftrek and the starter's deduction. This page isn't about the rule itself; that's explained in the urencriterium for Dutch freelancers on the blog. Here's how Peil tracks your progress, and which settings connect to it.
Your progress in the Financial Lab
Near the top of the Financial Lab, next to your rate calculation, sits a subtle progress indicator: your total hours this year against the 1,225-hour threshold.
The bar counts every logged hour, billable and internal alike: hours for clients, retainer hours, fixed-project hours, and non-billable hours like business development or admin. Once you reach 1,225 hours, the indicator flips from orange to green. See Using the Financial Lab for the rest of that page.
Getting internal hours to count
You're already logging hours for clients for your invoices. Internal hours (business development, admin, training) count toward the urencriterium just as much, but only if you actually log them: Peil can't count hours that were never recorded anywhere. In the timesheet, set the status to "Internal" instead of picking a client. See Tracking hours for how that works.
Activities: billable and non-billable
At Settings → Activities you manage the catalog of activities you can pick from when logging hours, both billable and non-billable. New activities are added automatically the first time you type them into the timesheet; here you remove them again, or search for what already exists.
Starter's deduction: the exception the criterion still gates
At Settings → Business, Peil automatically estimates, based on your start date, whether you likely still qualify for the starter's deduction. If that's wrong for a given year (say, because you were self-employed before), you flip the toggle manually.
This toggle only overrides the automatic date estimate. The urencriterium still applies on top of it: fall short of 1,225 hours and the starter's deduction is off the table regardless of how you've set this toggle.
See Tax reserve for how the zelfstandigenaftrek and starter's deduction feed into your tax estimate.
